No university lets a study on a human being begin without a board that can approve it, demand changes, or stop it outright. That has been standard for decades.
Not one frontier AI lab has agreed to anything like it.
What four of them have agreed to is a desk, an access badge, and the right for an outsider to publish what they find. That is more than most regulated industries offer.
It still cannot stop anything.
So I want Societal Review Boards at frontier labs and every large organization building advanced technology. Ethicists, philosophers, scientists, consumers and regulators with the power to remove a reckless chief executive, and none on a competing board.
This is probably not what the labs mean by regulation, and that is the point. If they are afraid and will not stop because of the arms race, let us give them a hand.
