What is cryptocurrency?
Op 20 juli 2016 maakte de Ethereum Foundation, de non-profitorganisatie die het Ethereum-netwerk maakte, onderhoudt en updatet, een nieuwe versie van het Ethereum-mainnet via een hard fork. Het veranderde de geschiedenis van de blockchain en wees de $ 60 miljoen aan eigen munt ETH (Ether), gestolen tijdens de "The DAO"-hack, opnieuw toe aan de eigenaren.
Net als zijn neefje Ethereum gebruikt Ethereum Classic ook het Proof-of-Work miningalgoritme. Maar in tegenstelling tot Ethereum bedraagt de oorspronkelijke voorraad ETC-munten een vaste voorraad van 210.700.000 die na verloop van tijd op een deflatoire manier worden vrijgegeven, net als zijn voorganger Bitcoin.
Mijnen is een rekenintensief proces waarbij sommige deelnemers aan het blockchain-netwerk transacties verifiëren en beloond worden met nieuwe tokens. Zo worden nieuwe ETC-munten gemaakt (of vrijgegeven). Eedereen met een computer kan ETC 'mijnen'.
De oorspronkelijke blockchain werd omgedoopt tot Ethereum Classic en de nieuwe blockchain, waarvan de diefstal uit de geschiedenis was gewist, ging verder als Ethereum. Ethereum Classic werkt hetzelfde als Ethereum en ondersteunt smart contracts en niet-fungible tokens, ofwel NFT's. Daarnaast zijn Ethereum-DApps ook volledig cross-compatibel met Ethereum Classic.
