20 липня 2016 року Ethereum Foundation, некомерційна організація, яка створила, підтримує й оновлює мережу Ethereum, представила нову версію основного мейннету Ethereum за допомогою хардфорку. Це змінило історію блокчейну й переасигнувало рідну монету ETH (Ether) на суму 60 мільйонів доларів, викрадену під час злому «The DAO», її власникам.
Як і його двоюрідний брат Ethereum, Ethereum Classic також використовує алгоритм майнінгу, заснований на доказі виконання роботи. Однак, на відміну від Ethereum, рідні монети ETC мають фіксовану пропозицію в кількості 210 700 000 штук, яку з часом буде випущено дефляційним способом, як і пропозицію момент попередника ETC, біткоїна.
Майнінг — це інтенсивний обчислювальний процес із великим об’ємом розрахунків, за допомогою якого деякі учасники мережі блокчейнів перевіряють транзакції й отримують винагороду у вигляді нових токенів. Ось так і створюються (або випускаються) нові монети ETC, а «майнити» ETC може будь-яка людина з комп’ютером.
Оригінальний блокчейн було перейменовано в Ethereum Classic, а новий блокчейн, крадіжка якого була стерта з історії, продовжив свій шлях під назвою Ethereum. Ethereum Classic працює подібно до Ethereum і підтримує смарт-контракти й незамінні токени або NFT. Крім того, Ethereum DApps також повністю сумісні з Ethereum Classic.
